Bah, Humbug!

Bah, Humbug has now been updated to fix a few naughty bugs that I've spotted recently while tidying up some of the games code and recompiling with the more modern compiler. Mac version is online and I will update the Windows version in the next few days.

About the game:

It's the day after your school Xmas party and your parents are away for the weekend.

It's a great idea to see if you can find your Xmas presents before they get back because you know they are in dads safe. It's just a matter of finding the five digit code.

There's also mums missing Xmas cards to find. Your friends think they are so funny hiding them. Also, while you are searching the house, it might be wise to avoid the ghost of Scrooge who is wandering around. Unless you can find a way to get rid of him?

Manage all this, and somehow get your school homework done, before your parents return and you really will have a very, merry Xmas. Good Luck!

Bah, Humbug! was written for the SyntaxBomb adventure game competition way back in 2018, and is available for OSX and Windows. The game was created with GameMaker Studio 2. I generally update it every Xmas to make sure it stays playable. The current version was uploaded on 5th December, 2023.

If you get stuck anywhere then please feel free to ask for a hint. I wrote this game for the old-school text adventure players and feedback from players who didn't play the old two word Scott Adams adventures, or similar, have struggled to complete the game. I am happy to share clues personally, rather than just post the complete solution online.

I will say that there is a main objective within the game, which is to find all the safe codes and open the safe to get to the Xmas presents. Sub quests include:

Finishing your school homework.

Finding all the Xmas cards.

Getting rid of the ghost of Scrooge before he saps away all your score.

All of those objectives are optional, but will reward you with a greater score. 

Mac users please refer to the instructions at the bottom of this file regarding running on OSX post Catalina.

Launching the game on Mac's:

This game is not code-signed so it's very likely that you will need to switch out inoculation checks on MacOS post Catalina. Here's how you can play the game if you do have an issue trying to launch it.

Unzip the Bah Humbug.zip file and drag the app into your applications folder (DO NOT TRY TO LAUNCH YET)

Open a shell window and then paste in the command below (Don't press enter yet)

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine

Leave a space after quarantine  and then drag the .app file onto the Terminal window so the full path to the app is visible.

Press enter and then you can close the shell window.

Bah, Humbug! will now launch normally. You only need to follow this process once.

Windows users can just extract the game and run normally.
